Responsible Tourism

What is responsible tourism to Itchy Feet?

As residents in the destination our loyalty to the local community is essential. We consider responsible tourism a shared responsibility between you as a traveler and us as your host. We believe in small actions rather than big words, and appreciate your contributions.

Environment

Itchy Feet appreciates the economic gain that tourism brings to a country. However, it's an undeniable fact that tourism can have a negative effect on the environment. As residents in the local community we have first hand experience with the environmental impact of tourism, and care about Dahab as our home. We take our responsibility seriously and all of our instructors and guides share our concern. We kindly ask you to take the necessary precautions for our environment.

Sustainable community

When small scale tourism came to Dahab, the local families benefited by setting up small businesses catering for tourists needs. While the needs of tourists have developed and changed we believe in keeping the benefits within the local community and not losing it to international corporations. Therefore we work with local businesses that support the sustainable community here without compromising the standard of your holiday. We always use local drivers and local guides and instructors where we can. The hotel is locally owned with a sustainable and environmental profile.

Culture

In an increasingly multi cultural world with a high demand for cultural acceptance, we are pleased to welcome you to an environment where the way of life is different from home. When you get here you'll have the chance to learn about the culture. The locals appreciate your efforts learning Arabic and respecting the religion. We encourage you to take advantage of our understanding of the culture as enhanced understanding will enable you to enjoy a new culture.

How to be a responsible guest in Dahab:

Waste – Waste is probably one of the biggest environmental issues Dahab is facing today. We kindly ask you to carry any waste you have back to the hotel as we know the rubbish will be picked up weekly and disposed of in a responsible way.
Plastic carrier bags – Plastic bags take 1000 of years to decompose. The wind in Dahab carries empty plastic bags into the sea and up into the mountains where they harm the local flora and fauna. To reduce plastic bag litter in Dahab, please bring your own reusable shopping bag and say no to plastic bags in Dahab.
Plastic bottles – You will be drinking bottled water when you are here. Used plastic bottles are used as candle holders in many Dahab restaurants. Please take your empty water bottles back to the hotel where they will be recycled or reused. If you are unable to carry them back to the hotel please squash the air out before disposing of them in a rubbish bin. This prevents the wind from carrying them into the desert and surrounding areas.
Protection – Look after and reserve the areas that we visit. These range from the coral reef to the desert, don’t leave anything behind and don’t take anything from these areas. In some instances things have been growing for longer than you have been alive so please don’t ruin it for those after us.
Reef protection - Coral can be destroyed with one touch and will take thousands of years to re grow. Please restrain from touching any aquatic life in the Red Sea and always use the easy access points for diving, swimming and snorkeling.
Purchases – This precious environment is not for sale. Please be aware of what you’re buying in the local shops and markets and do not support people selling coral or any endangered species.
Energy resources –Dahab is located in a desert region and energy supplies are limited. Please don’t leave on air conditioning, lights or fans when you leave a room. Be aware of how much water you are using and follow the advice of the hotel.
Bartering – Bartering is a part of the culture here, so don't be afraid to get involved. You may find it hard to estimate the price for souvenirs in Egypt, so feel free to ask us for guidelines. When bartering please remember the shop keeper still needs to make a living.
Bedouin culture - Bedouins are the native people of the Sinai with their own traditions. We have hand picked a local experience and included it in most of our packages. You are supporting the Bedouin community when you join Itchy Feet Adventures.
Respect – Please respect the local customs and beliefs of the country. Egypt is a Muslim country and therefore Islamic rules and laws will sometimes apply. Sunbathing in bathing suits is fine on the beach however we suggest that you do not wear skimpy clothing when walking along the promenade and in the local town.
Ramadan - is one of the most important times of the year in Egypt. During the holy month of Ramadan Muslims fast during the hours of sunlight. Tourist restaurants will still function as normal at this time and it is fine for you to consume food and drink in these areas. We kindly ask you not to eat, drink or smoke directly in front of drivers, guides and others who may be fasting.
Photo’s – Taking photo’s is a great way to show others your experiences on holiday and a great souvenir. Due to the cultures and religions, if you are not sure if it is ok to take a photo of something or someone, just ask. There may be some baksheesh (tip) required allowing you to take the photo, but it will make your holiday snaps look great!
